Reports of a pet dog that was stolen from its owner’s home, sold to a restaurant and slaughtered alive on the street in Shuangyashan city, Heilongjiang province have sparked fury among people in the local community and online.
The Golden Retriever named Maomao was stolen from its owner’s home on November 26 and sold to a restaurant, the owner of which was seen cutting the dog’s legs off and skinning the animal while it was still alive, according to Xinhua, citing Heilongjiang TV Station.
A Weibo user under the name “Yequan” said that his friend witnessed the horrific scene and offered 500 yuan to buy the dog, but the owner refused. After images showing the dog lying on a blood-stained sidewalk outside the restaurant were published online, a group of angry citizens confronted the restaurant owner, who later removed the shop’s plaque and closed the place down, the report said.
The three-year-old dog had given birth only two months ago.

Due to a lack of specific laws regarding the issue, stories of dogs being stolen and butchered at restaurants are all-too-often reported across the country. In August, 17 men in Zhejiang pled guilty to trading in tons of toxic dog meat that ended up on people’s plates. Two months ago, a man in Shanghai took matters into his own hands and killed a dog thief who’d stolen his pet and poisoned it with the intention of selling it to a restaurant.
