Staff members at a government-sponsored homeless shelter in Gushi county, Henan province reportedly tied two boys, one of them mentally ill, to trees so that they couldn’t run around. Pictures show ropes fastened around the kids’ waists, and staff merely insist that the rope is ‘loose enough’ that the kids can still move around.
Photos of the homeless shelter have caused a huge uproar online. The center, run by the county’s civil affairs bureau, holds 20 homeless people, including the two kids. It is in shoddy condition, reports say, and volunteers who visited the shelter said some people were sleeping under filthy blankets on the floor and on wooden beds.
Netizens have argued that this shouldn’t still be happening in a country with one of the largest economies in the world.
“Our country has become a moderately rich one in the world. This kind of news shouldn’t be happening,” one web user said. “I guarantee, I don’t believe [it].”
