A total of 16 billboards along a 400-meter-long stretch of road were rented out to advertise a teenager’s 16th birthday party in Jinjiang city, Fujian province. The billboards, reading “Welcome to my 16th birthday party!” went viral on social media as soon as passersby posted the images online this week.
A reporter who had the unenviable task of tracking down the teen pictured in the advertisements discovered that his father, surnamed Shi, is the owner of a trade company and has no qualms with shelling out thousands of yuan to inform the boy’s friends and family about his sweet 16, rather than, you know, sending out a card with an RSVP (is that what we used to do before social media?).
According to a Nandu news report, some tuhao parents are said to be splurging up to 100,000 yuan on birthday parties for their 10-year-olds. If you think that’s sickening, just remember what their weddings will probably be like.
