It was recently reported that dog thieves in Hebei province’s Xiyao village were using poisoned darts to kill dogs and sell them for their meat. Villagers said around seven to eight dogs were stolen and killed in just one day.
The dart is about 15 centimeters in length, with a sharp, pointed tip and wings at the end. Once the dog is shot, the dart’s poison is pushed into dog’s body with the help of a spring in the middle, NetEase reports. The dog dies immediately after being shot.
“The thieves drive vans around the village. Once they find a big dog, they shoot and drag the body into their vans and run away quickly,” a villager told reporters.
Angry but helpless, the villagers said they don’t dare stop the thieves because they’re afraid that they may be shot by a dart (which has actually happened before). Now, they try to keep their dogs inside at home.
Selling poisoned dog meat is not unique to this village. In August, 17 men in Zhejiang pled guilty to trading in tons of toxic dog meat that ended up being sold to restaurants and eaten. Not all punishment for dog-killing is handed down by the court, however. In April, two men caught stealing dogs to sell for meat were brutally beaten by a mob in Guilin.
