Hundreds of abandoned bicycles have been piling up in front of a dormitory building at a university in Hunan province, attracting the attention of local Chinese media, who have described the area as a “bicycle graveyard.”
NetEase reports that students of the university have suggested that the school should reclaim the scrap bicycles and refit them so that they can either be donated to less affluent students or be used as part of a campus bikeshare.
Some web users applauded the idea of donating the bicycles to underprivileged students, however others were concerned over the state of the bikes, believing that they are already in a state of disrepair.
In September, Shanghai’s Tongji University reported that it had recycled 200 abandoned bikes, which were used for the city’s first free campus bikeshare. Each renovated bicycle was then painted green, given a number, and labelled “Tongji University Free Bicycle.”
