At least 10 people were killed and four more injured when the scaffolding collapsed at a high school in Beijing yesterday morning.
One of the staff members at the high school, which is affiliated with the Tsinghua University in Beijing, told the Beijing News that no students were injured during the accident.
The collapse occurred at a campus stadium construction site around 8:00 a.m. during colligation of the scaffolding, NetEase News reports. Related departments in Beijing are still investigating the cause of the incident.
Police, firemen and ambulances rushed to the scene soon after the scaffolding went down. Injured victims were sent to the hospital immediately, while the surrounding area of the campus was blocked off.
Scaffolding has been blamed for deadly incidents on buildings under renovation in the past. In 2010, a huge blaze ravaged an apartment in Shanghai’s Jing’an district because the building’s scaffolding caught fire. A total of 58 people were killed in the incident, bringing to light other cases involving shoddy construction procedures across China.
