The hippopotamus that was severely wounded when it jumped out of a moving truck in Taiwan last week died after sustaining injuries in yet another accident.
The 32-year-old hippo, named Ah Ho, was found dead on Monday in a pond that he had been transported to after suffering two severe injuries.
On Friday, the hippo had jumped out of a moving truck as he was being transported to Miaoli county to a farm in Taichung. The animal’s teeth were knocked out and one of his legs broken.
The next day, the hippo was involved in another accident when the wires of a hoist broke and his container fell two meters to the ground, CCTV News reported. Ah Ho was sent to a pond at a farm, where he soon after succumbed to his injuries.
A vet confirmed that the hippo had died from internal injuries caused by the accidents and that “he must have suffered excruciating pain,” according to Tomo News.
The animal’s owner is now under investigation and faces up to 16,000 USD in fines for animal abuse and negligence.
