A series of pictures showing hundreds of migrant workers having their lunch adjacent to a construction site in Guiyang city, Guizhou province gained a great deal of attention online.
The migrant workers, whose ages range from 18 to 60 years old, traveled from their hometown to work in Guiyang in an attempt to find a job during the building boom. Unfortunately, they aren’t supplied with proper living security, reports Tencent New
“Our boss disregards us and we can’t actually do anything about it. As we are often pushed to finish the project quickly, we have no choice but eat lunch like this,” a young worker, surnamed Zhao, was quoted as saying.
When they started, the workers had to deal with constant hunger while laboring, as no lunch was prepared for them.
A few residents living nearby saw soon saw a business opportunity. At around 12 o’clock noon, they began to serve lunch for the construction workers, charging 10 yuan per meal. Over time, the area has become a “dining center”.
An elderly worker said he is concerned about food safety, but sees no alternative way.
A number of web users gathered on forums to show their concerns over migrant workers’ working conditions.
A web user named 两手空空 commented: “There wouldn’t be so many high-rises if not for the migrant workers. You’ve been working so hard. I’d like to applaud you.”
“Eating near a construction site is pretty normal for construction workers. The most heartrending thing is when the new year comes, they probably won’t get paid,” said another user named 你若离弃后会无妻.
