Three people have been confirmed dead and one injured after rubble from a landslide buried a portion of an expressway in Guizhou province, rescuers said yesterday.
Four cars were swallowed up by the debris after the landslide struck at 3:39 p.m. on Sunday in Erlang village, Xishui county of Zunyi. More than 30 soldiers and three firefighter squads were dispatched to the scene, where they picked through over 80,000 cubic meters of concrete rubble to find victims.
Landslides often occur in heavy rain regions and can be triggered by construction and deforestation. In September, 22 were killed and dozens injured after a landslide ravaged most of Guizhou’s Yinping village. The majority of casualties were children or elderly.
