Two children were living with their dead mother for seven days before a visitor came to their home, located in a small town of Guizhou province. The 34-year-old woman, Deng Caiying, had passed away on December 27 and her body was discovered on January 3 when a volunteer came to check up on the family, Sina News reports.
Her two sons, one in sixth grade and the other in seventh, said in reports that after their mother’s death, they locked the door to her room without telling anyone, for fear of being scolded.
Relatives said that Deng had suffered from mental illness. The kids were left in her care after their father died in 2011. She applied for a deformity card in 2013, and her health became so poor that she couldn’t even walk on her own. The exact cause of the woman’s death is not yet known.
Deng and her children lived in a small, dilapidated home that had been left for them by relatives. A local volunteer was let inside by the younger of the two children when she came to check on information for their educational fund. Deng had stayed in one room and the kids slept in the parlor on a bed made of planks of wood.
It’s unclear where the children have been placed for care as police investigate the case.
