A scary-big fungus was recently photographed on display at a specialty shop in Hezhou, Guangxi. The ganoderma lucidum, known as the lingzhi mushroom in China, measures 107 centimeters in diameter, weighs 7.5 kilograms and is probably large enough to protect Kim Jong-un and his entire entourage during a rainstorm.
The lingzhi mushroom has been used in the practice of Chinese Traditional Medicine for over 2,000 years and is regarded as the “herb of spiritual potency” for attributed health benefits including the control of blood glucose levels, modulation of the immune system, hepatoprotection and more. It’s also believed that the ‘shroom increases longevity, thus why this particularly gigantic fungus has been dubbed the “mushroom of immortality”.
Before it was widely cultivated, the lingzhi mushroom was used mainly by the rich and by members of the nobility. It can now be purchased in supplement form or by the bulk for up to 50 USD per pound overseas. It’s unclear how much storeowner Wei Fangning (above) will be selling his divine fungus for (or if at all, he looks pretty damn happy with the thing).
