A court in Shanghai has upheld the death sentence for a former medical student at Fudan University who killed his roommate by poisoning him, in what he claims was an “April Fool’s joke” gone wrong.
The convicted, 28-year-old Lin Senhao, stood his second trial in December after appealing the initial death sentence set in February 2014. He was arrested in April 2013 when his roommate fell ill and died after drinking from a water dispenser which had been poisoned. Lin later confessed that he’d stolen a toxic chemical and put it in the water as an “April Fool’s joke”.
Just before his appeal trial in December, it was reported that Lin had tried to hand off a letter to the parents of the victim, Huang Yang, pleading for their forgiveness. “I can only say sorry. I want to kneel down to apologize, and I hope you can forgive my soul,” he wrote. Yang’s family refused to take the letter.
