M18, a nightclub that had been falsely linked to the New Year’s Eve stampede on the Bund, has closed down for good.
As reports of the stampede tragedy broke on December 31, rumors surfaced on social media that the mob-rush had been triggered by people running towards fake US bills thrown from a club located at No. 18 on the Bund. Police later debunked these claims, and found that the fake notes (actually promotional coupons) were scattered about 60 meters away from the stampede site, after the incident occurred.
The website of Bund 18, the property in which the nightclub is located, says that the venue has been closed temporarily, although a former employee of the company told us that it would not be reopening. This person added that the New Year’s Eve rumors had hurt the reputation of the club.
According to Smart Shanghai, the club was losing money and had planned on closing around Chinese New Year anyways.
