GAC Group, a Chinese automobile maker based in Guangzhou, debuted its latest concept car with a built-in fish tank at the Detroit auto show on January 13, 2015.
This unordinary car, called WitStar, is a new energy vehicle sedan. The fish tank is located in the center of the backseat, replacing the pull-down armrest compartment. The idea was to give the spacious backseat area more of a living room feel. “Therefore we put a fish tank in,” Zhang Fan, chief designer at GAC Engineering, was quoted as saying in a Wall Street Journal report.
“In southern China, water means fortune and wealth,” Tang Xiaojian, studio engineer for GAC, further explained to AFP.
This isn’t the first time GAC has displayed the design, but it is the first time the company has showcased it outside of China.
Visitors of the show were definitely attracted to the Witstar, but unfortunately for aquarium enthusiasts, Zhang has stressed that this “doesn’t mean that all GAC Motor’s cars will have a fish tanks. It’s more symbolic.”
Zhang hopes to create originality, break stereotypes and help people all over the world recognize that Chinese brands are more than just cheap imitations. So naturally…fish tank arm rest.
