A couple in Chengdu city, Sichuan province are now peddling items on the streets to pay for the costs of raising nearly 60 stray cats and dogs that they have adopted in the past 10 years, after spending hundreds of thousand yuan on the animals already.
Hu dines with his “babies”.
NetEase reportes that the couple, surnamed Hu, started adopting stray cats and dogs in 2005, when they found a sick stray cat stranded on the roof of their building.
“No one at the scene helped, so we rescued the cat and brought him home to treat him,” Mr. Hu said. “Afterwards, the cat stayed with us.”
Everyone who lives in the neighborhood knows that Hu and his wife regularly take in stray animals, and if ever they find an abandoned cat or dog lurking the streets, they know to send it to Hu’s house.
Hu’s wife, a former nurse, cleans the animals and gives them injections routinely to keep them healthy. “I became their vet when treatment costs at the animal hospital became too expensive to afford,” she said.
Hu’s wife is photographed preparing an injection for the animals.
For the past ten years, Hu and his wife have been raising around 60 animals, and they all together live in a 20 square meter house. From 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m, they “dine” together every day, too.
Hu said he has given each of the animals a name.
“We need to spend 3,000RMB on all of the animals and our rent costs 600RMB per month,” said Hu. “Setting up a stand to sell stuff can only chip in a little for the expenses. We’ve spent all of our savings to raise them. I’m hoping more warm-hearted people can help us by adopting some of the pets. We don’t want any money but only ask them to be good to the animals.”
Hu also said he would hand over his “babies” to new owners who are responsible and trustworthy.
