Police shot dead two stowaways who’d come at them with knives late Sunday in Guangxi, authorities announced today, while another one is still on the run.
Police officers spotted the group of five stowaways at around 8:20 p.m. yesterday in Pingxiang city, near the border of Vietnam. The stowaways, identified in a Sina News report as Xinjiang ethnic, resisted arrest and reportedly attacked the officers with knives.
Two of the alleged attackers were shot dead at the scene, while two more were detained by police and another fled. Local police said that a manhunt is underway.
Police have busted around 262 human smuggling cases since the Ministry of Public Security launched a campaign to crack down on human smuggling near China’s southwestern border regions last April. The cases involved 352 suspects who’d organized such operations and 852 suspects who’d attempted to cross the border illegally.
