Haichang Holdings announced plans on Monday to create a huge polar theme park in Shanghai that will cover 297,155 square meters of land next to Dishui Lake.
Haichang, a leading developer and operator of theme parks in China, just obtained land-use rights for the project for around 120 million USD. The Shanghai Haichang Polar Ocean World isn’t your traditional marine theme park, according to the developer, as it “will position itself as a world-class marine life culture experience complex,” whatever that means. It will consist of an amusement park, a themed resort hotel and scores of commercial facilities. The marine park will also be home to 13 exhibition halls, four animal interaction plazas and four large cinemas (including an omnimax movie theater), among other entertainment activities.
The park will be co-designed by renowned companies that assisted with Disney and SeaWorld projects, according to a press release. The company hopes to compete with Shanghai Disneyland, which, somehow, is still scheduled to open this year.
The park will be constructed near Dishui Lake in Shanghai’s Nanhui district, about a 1.5-hour drive from downtown Shanghai and a half-hour drive from the Pudong Airport.
The Shanghai Haichang Polar Ocean World is scheduled to go into operation in 2017, and will mark Haichang’s seventh polar-themed attraction in China, joining the likes of similar parks in cities including Tianjin, Wuhan and Chengdu, but better. BETTER.
