A short film featuring a Beijing-based comedian who acts out 18 different characters from different regions of China has made waves online.
The star, Mike Sui, has been widely applauded by viewers for his ability to demonstrate various dialects and speaking styles characteristic of each region, as well as the accents of American, British and French characters.
Mike Sui, or Sui Kai, is a comedian and performer in China who gained internet fame three years ago for another video he’d uploaded to Weibo called “12 Beijingers”. He also acted in the 2010 film Welcome to Shama Town, and appeared alongside Stephon Marbury in the 2014 musical “I Am Marbury”.
Sui’s father is Chinese and his mother is American. He grew up in Beijing, where he spent most of his childhood. He lived with his mother in Madison, Wisconsin when he was in junior high, and in 2005, he moved back to Beijing again and decided to stay there permanently.
Because his father is a native Beijinger, Sui speaks with a standard Beijing accent. He’s also able to speak American English fluently.
