One construction worker was killed and 16 other people injured when a school building in Jiangxi province collapsed after midnight.
A eight-floor building on the campus of Jiangxi Science and Technology Normal University was under construction when it toppled onto itself at around 1:00 a.m. today, trapping dozens of workers, Sina News reports, citing a press release.
Rescue teams were sent to the campus, located Nanchang’s Honggutan New District, and search dogs sniffed out debris for survivors until daybreak. All injured workers were sent to the hospital.
Last November, two workers died and more were injured when a private building under construction collapsed in Guangzhou. About a month later, three kindergarten students were killed when the roof of their school building fell in in Hebei province. The classrooms had been rented and renovated to take in extra students, according to police. Similar cases have typically been blamed on shoddy construction practices.
