A water buffalo weighing more than 700 kilograms went on a rampage in downtown Pixian, Chengdu on January 29. The animal forced traffic to stop, injured pedestrians and knocked over its owner along with police officers. An officer tried to knock it down with a car, but the buffalo still stood strong. It was finally put down after taking four gun shots and another round of smashing by a four-wheel drive.
The water buffalo belonged to local merchant Zhou Chengquan. The animal was meant to get sent off to Anjing to be slaughtered, but as soon as it was picked up in a truck, it jumped out of the back and ran off.
Zhou and his wife ran after the water buffalo for over 10 kilometers into downtown Pixian, where the mad animal rushed into the traffic and scared off pedestrians. Zhou called the police for help.
The police tried to knock the water buffalo down with a car and after 10 hits, the animal ran off, but it was hurt badly.
Police officer He Renjun then got out of the car and took out his gun to shoot the buffalo, but the animal suddenly jumped up and horned him over. He pulled the trigger as he fell to the ground. After four shots, the buffalo fell over. Another police officer, Qiu Yi, then drove a four-wheel drive to knock the buffalo down and push it till it was pinned to a tree.
