Two people were killed and 34 more injured after low visibility caused by dense fog resulted in a 56-car pileup on the Chengdu-Zigong-Luzhou Expressway in Sichuan province yesterday morning.
The extent of the damage is pretty much as disastrous as one would expect in a chain of rear-end collisions involving over 50 cars. Authorities had issued an alert for heavy fog in Zigong, Yibin, Dazhou and other areas of Sichuan yesterday. It’s so thick that some vehicles in the pictures are barely even visible.
Local authorities moved damaged vehicles from the Zigong-Wanjia bridge section of the expressway as injured people were rushed to the hospital. One passenger on a bus got out and waved a red coat around on the expressway to warn oncoming drivers, preventing what could have been an even worse disaster.
