The thought of going back home during Spring Festival still single was too much to bear for one 32-year-old man in Dalian, Liaoning province, so he went to extreme measures to avoid nagging from his parents. The man reportedly kidnapped a young woman as she was walking home after a night shift with the idea that he would marry her and take her to his home town for the holiday, Tencent reports.
The suspect, surnamed Liu, had remained single for years because of his “isolated” personality, neighbors told reporters. Dreading the pressure his parents would put on him during his trip home for the Lunar New Year holiday, he got the idea that he could just kind of force a woman to be his wife.
Just as any good bride-stealer would do, Liu prepared some ropes and woven bags. He started hanging around on his bike near the construction site where he worked until he found “the one”, who ended up being a young lady surnamed Tan.
He followed Tan on her way home until they were in a quiet area. Liu pretended to ask her for directions, then dragged her into a ditch before binding her and carrying her home.
Luckily for Tan, she was rescued after about two hours.
“I got a phone call from a strange number that morning,” her boyfriend said. “It lasted for like 20 minutes. Although the voice wasn’t very clear, I was pretty sure it was my girlfriend and she seemed to need help”.
“I suspected that she might have been kidnapped or robbed,” he said. “Then I immediately called the police.”
Liu admitted that he just didn’t want to go home and deal with the same old interrogation. “I’m the only one who is still single in my family and my parents and relatives would keep stressing me with questions like why I am single during family reunion,” he told police after confessing to his crime.
Not that questions like “why is your wife’s mouth bound with duct tape?” would be any easier to answer.
