Shanghai’s Yuyuan Garden was not its usual jam-packed self in the days leading up to the Lunar New Year holiday. The scenic area typically sees massive crowds of visitors filing in for the annual Spring Festival light show, which was cancelled this year in the wake of the tragic New Year’s Eve stampede at the bund.
While there are still people seen roaming Yu Garden’s narrow alleyways, the crowds are nothin’ compared to last year, when over 600,000 people showed up for just the first day of the three-day celebration.
Yu Garden isn’t the only event that got cut following the New Year’s Eve tragedy, which resulted in the death of 36 people. A similar lantern festival celebration at Guyi Garden in Jiading district was also canceled for “safety reasons”. Officials put the kibosh on another celebration at Fangta Garden as well.
