At least five people were killed in an explosion at a fireworks shop in Zhejiang province yesterday, the first day of the lunar new year.
The blast occurred at around 4:00 p.m. in the Xiangzhu township of Yongkang city, according to Xinhua. The shop owner, a man surnamed Chen, set off some firecrackers during a demonstration, but apparently lit the explosives too close to a stack of fireworks stored outside of the shop, causing them to ignite as well.
Three children and two adults were killed in the blast and other injured people are now being hospitalized and are in stable condition. Chen has been detained.
Deadly explosions at fireworks shops and factories are sadly not uncommon in the weeks surrounding the Chinese New Year. A total of 138 cities across China this year banned fireworks due in part to concerns over personal safety.
