Oh no. Oh god no. The owner of the pig that became famous on Chinese media this week after it was spotted kneeling outside of a temple in Wenzhou was reportedly butchered by its owner before he’d learned of the holy hog’s stardom.
The pig was seen bowing its head outside of the temple for hours this past weekend, and photos taken by passersby went viral on social media. Some guessed that the prostrating pig was actually just weak due to Vitamin E deficiency. Others speculated that the creature was seeking protection from Buddha, but alas, it was not to be.
The owner of the pig, a man surnamed Huang, has now revealed in a Wenzhou Metropolis Daily report that the pig had escaped its hog pen on the morning of February 22 and was searching for food.
In a cruelly ironic twist, Huang had re-captured the animal and sent it off to the slaughterhouse only after he’d learned that the pig was internet famous.
Huang was apparently shocked to learn of his pig’s pilgrimage and said he regretted killing it.
