It was a dark, dark Spring Festival for one pet lover in Dongguan, Guangdong province who woke up on the eve of the lunar new year to find that thieves had made off with nearly 1,000 of his baby turtles.
Burglars were seen on surveillance footage breaking into a neighbor’s home in the early hours of the morning on February 18 before forcing their way into the greenhouse where the turtle breeder, surnamed Lin, kept his pets.
They spent around 45 minutes stuffing the wee turtles into plastic bags as Lin was sleeping, according to Southern Metropolis Daily. Lin woke at around 7:00 a.m. to feed his precious pets only to find that all were missing except for one bag containing around 200 turtles, which the thieves had apparently forgotten.
Lin told police that he’d purchased 1,800 baby water turtles in September and each one now weighed around 100 to 200 grams. Since he’d raised them for around five months, the turtles could have been sold for up to 1,100 yuan each, the report said, citing a member of the Dongguan Turtle Breeding Association. It’s estimated that Lin lost around 1.2 million yuan worth of turtles.
