In Sanya City, located in South China’s Hainan province, a large number of dead fish have been seen floating around Sanya River. Locals have complained about the foul stench caused by the growing number of dead fish accumulating in the river. The mass fish deaths have attracted hungry egrets which have come scavenging for food.
According to cleaners in the area, the first dead fish appeared on Monday and since then, more have been popping up.
The fish appear to be dying because of a lack of oxygen due to changes in weather conditions, according to environment officials who have come to conduct tests on the water. The team said it would continue to monitor water conditions.
This seems to be an annual problem at Sanya River, where dead fish have been observed popping up every spring.
