A 56-year-old woman was found dead with head injuries after reportedly getting stuck between the doors of an elevator at her Pudong apartment on Sunday.
The victim, surnamed Wang, lived in the fourth floor of the residential building on Huanlin Road. A man surnamed Chen who claims to have been friends with Wang said that he and his wife were waiting for her at the building’s entrance on Sunday night but she never came down.
When they failed to reach her by phone, they walked up the steps and noticed a gap on the outer elevator door on the fourth floor. Chen saw through the gap that the elevator was stuck between the fifth and sixth floor.
After prying the door open, they saw Wang lying in the elevator car, bleeding from her head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Other residents had reported experiencing problems with the elevator, which was produced by the Shanghai Congyou Elevator Co and maintained by the Yuanfan Elevaor Engineering Co. A woman living on the seventh floor told Xinmin Morning News that she was stuck in the elevator for 10 minutes on Sunday after it took her to the wrong floor.
Other residents who’d complained about similar issues said they’d called maintenance several times but the lift continued to have problems.
