Shanghai police have officially arrested former national footballer Gao Feng and famous actor Nie Yuan after they assaulted a Shanghai taxi driver on Tuesday, leaving the cabbie with a fractured eye socket and a battered nose and shoulder.
According to Xinhua, the pair’s urine samples delivered positive results for crystal methamphetamine (AKA crystal meth), which they confessed to taking during interrogation by police.
The instigator of the scuffle, former CCTV news anchor Qiu Qiming, was released on bail.
This high-profile incident follows a number of violent meth-fueled attacks in China, including a delusional knife-wielding Shanxi man taking his wife hostage in September last year.
It will be interesting to see what penalties await the pair, given China’s notoriously tough stance on drugs amid a crackdown on the recent meth scourge.
In the meantime, they are likely on the lookout for a good lawyer, perhaps the one who helped secure a cushy sentence for fellow celebrity drug fiend Jaycee Chan.
