A new tenant was tidying up his apartment in Bengbu, Anhui province recently when he came across an unexpected and horrifying find under his bed: a rotting corpse.
The incident occurred on January 30, two days after the man, surnamed Wang, signed the lease for his new apartment, Anhui Business News reported yesterday. He was moving the mattress of the bed when he saw what appeared to be a hand. At first, he thought it was a mannequin. Upon moving the entire mattress, however, Wang realized he was very, very wrong.
The suspected victim was 22-year-old A Li (a pseudonym), the previous inhabitant of the house who neighbors said had an occasional male visitor. The landlord told police that the tenant on the lease was actually a man called A Bing and that his lease has expired on January 8.
Police tracked A Bing down at a local hotel, and he eventually confessed to choking A Li to death.
A Bing and A Li met in 2012 while they were working in Shanghai. The two fell in love and had an illegitimate son. Two years later, A Li ended things with the man and moved back to her hometown, Bengbu.
The lovesick man followed A Li to the city and rented out an apartment for her, and while she accepted the offer to live there, the gesture apparently never won her over. A Li repeatedly refused A bing’s requests to get back together. The man paid his ex a drunken visit on December 20, shortly after the midnight, he told police.
The former couple had a nightlong conversation that erupted into an intense argument, and ultimately, turned deadly. A Bing said he killed her at around 15:00 that day and hid her body under the bed before escaping.
