A 44-year-old business man from Jingguan town of Chongqing municipality has reportedly collected 150 antique beds from the Ming and Qing Dynasties worth several million yuan over the past 25 years.
Lin Zelǜ has been keen on collecting antique bed since at the age of 18. “In the beginning I would sell the antiques. I started collecting antique beds after I had some savings. Antique beds have a rich cultural history and many stories,” said Lin, adding that he had spent several million yuan and 25 years travelling across China collecting beds from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The edge of a bed carved with a “bat head”
Lin’s antique beds are stored in a 1,000-square-meter warehouse. “The rent is 100,000 yuan a year. I’ve rented for over ten years.” Lin added.
Lin and his wife, Cheng Fuqin, were sitting on an antique bed, which they sleep.
Lin currently deals in the flower and reproduction antique furniture business. Whenever he goes out on business trips, he will be always be sure to ask his contacts for advice on where he can go next to expand his collection.
“Three separate businessmen came to visit me and offered me 100 million yuan for all my antique beds, but I immediately rejected their offer,” said Lin. “I am reluctant to sell them, because I did my best to bring them in and I can’t afford to tear myself away from them.”
“My health is quite good after sleeping on an antique bed,” Lin said. “The warehouse is a little damp as a storage place” Lin told reporters. “My wish is to open a museum and let the locals see the beds for free.”
