A Chinese man who killed two people and injured seven others near his workplace in Hiroshima prefecture, Japan was yesterday sentenced to life imprisonment.
According to China News, Chen Mou, aged 32, carried out the attack in March of 2013 while in the employ of an oyster processing company. Wielding both a shovel and knife, he bludgeoned to death the company’s president and another employee, before later stabbing and injuring seven passersby.
During legal proceedings Chen did himself no favors, creating a disturbance in the detention center he was being held at and refusing to attend the first session of court. Later during subsequent hearings he was asked to leave the courtroom on three separate occasions due to his unintelligible ramblings.
When asked about whether he had been planning to kill anyone, Chen is on record at one of his hearings saying that “at one point, I wanted to kill people,” but later when asked whether the attacks were premeditated he repeatedly said “I don’t know, at the time I was very confused.”
In a report by DM News, Mr Chen was revealed to be a farmer, originally from Liaoning province, who left behind his wife and parents to go to Japan looking for work. “In the future I want to let my son go to university, so I came to Japan to earn money” he said.
He was granted a visa to Japan as part of a technical training program, but after the company he was originally hired by was fined for illegally taking on Chinese labor, he was let go and ended up working as a manual laborer at the aforementioned oyster factory.
The court determined that Chen’s vicious attack was the result of pent up anger at his living conditions, frustration at being away from his family and his lack of proficiency with Japanese which left him feeling isolated.
This incident will certainly not help foster better relations between the two regional powers, which are currently at one of their lowest ebbs in several years. Late last year a survey revealed that the majority of Chinese expect a war with Japan by 2020.
