An official in Hunan province was removed from her post after criticism poured in over a tree-planting ceremony featuring a red carpet that was rolled out for officials.
Tang Mei’e, former district head of the Yongzhou City All-China Women’s Federations, came under fire after pictures from the March 12 tree-planting event organized by the women’s federation and forestry bureau went online.
The images showed a group of people walking along a red carpet that was laid out on the mountain slope in Lingling district. Web users complained that the event was purely for show.
The organizers said that they’d planted over 25,000 trees throughout the day and that an old red carpet had been placed on the road because the mountain was slippery after rain, according to Xinhua.
Municipal authorities, however, said that rolling out the red carpet during the event violated disciplinary codes of the CPC and Tang was removed from her post. Other participants received warnings as well.
