Seven people were killed and another 19 injured after being struck by falling rocks at a popular tourist spot in Guilin. According to staff, the tragedy occurred as the visitors were getting ready to board boats at the Folded Brocade Hill (Diecai Shan), one of the Guilin’s most famous scenic parks.
Xinhua reported that the deaths were caused by a “huge boulder”, while other state broadcasters said “rocks” had fallen down the mountain.
Images showed the large rocks scattered along concrete steps next to blood stains and some tourists’ belongings.
According to Sina News, four of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene and another three critically injured victims later died at the hospital.
Among the 19 injured, eight were reportedly tourists from Taiwan. They are now receiving treatment at the Guilin People’s Hospital.
Then scenic spot is known for its karst typography which is apparently prone to rockfall.
Reporters who arrived at the scene noted a sign at the park warning visitors to “Beware of falling rocks”.
