We’ve seen men try to destroy ATMs with garden hoes, hammers, fire and even their bare hands, but never for this reason.
A 20-year-old Anhui man was recently caught on camera trying to vandalize an ATM in Shanghai, a criminal act which he hoped would land him in jail so that he could get a free meal.
Over the Spring Festival holiday, the man, surnamed Zhang, packed his bags and made the move from Anhui to Shanghai for a better job. He only had 100RMB in his pocket, and he’d spent all of his money when he stopped in Zhejiang, he told police.
Refusing to be stranded, he decided to walk to Shanghai from Zhejiang province. The task was not as breezy as he (for some reason) thought it would be. After he’d skipped several meals and was without money to purchase food, he decided to resort to a criminal act.
On Weihong street in the suburban Shanghai district of Jinshan, he grabbed a brick and started hitting an ATM. When police arrived at the scene, however, realized Zhang hadn’t actually committed a serious criminal offense, as he’d only broken the card slot of the ATM.
After learning of the man’s plights, police officers took him to the station and offered him a free meal, letting him go afterwards, Xinhua reports.
