The head of a Shanxi province village has been accused of killing four other village leaders who were found dead in a car on March 11 and is still at large, authorities say.
The bodies of the four victims were discovered in a vehicle belonging to Yao Wenli, the head of Xinkulüe village in Fanshi county. The county government announced on March 13 that Yao was the primary suspect in the case after finding a “killing list” in his house that had three of the four victims’ names on it.
According to Sina News, the three victims on the list were also village leaders. They’d recently gotten into a dispute with Yao over village finances, and had sent a joint letter to higher authorities in January reporting multiple counts of misconduct by Yao.
A man who’d worked for Yao as an accountant was also on the list and is now under police protection.
Officials with the Fanshi county government would not comment on the investigation.
