A major pork producer closed its factory in Shandong province following claims that it was using pigs that had ‘recovered’ from foot-and-mouth disease.
According to Shanghai Daily, the factory, which is based in Dezhou city, has suspended operation and an investigation into its products is to be carried out.
The pork producer, Jinluo Meat Product Co Ltd., has issued a statement saying that it is taking the allegations very seriously.
A man said to be responsible for delivering the pigs to the company claims he was given a stack of documents and certificates with officials stamps and signatures alongside the pigs. The certificates were supposedly issued by Yu Jiebing, vice director of the local animal health inspection institute. Yu, however, denies ever issuing such certificates.
