A woman originally from Fujian province drank an entire bottle of hand soap on a flight back to China in order to postpone her deportation after a failed asylum bid.
According to People’s Daily, 28-year-old Chen Lili had been living in the US on a fake passport since 2004, and had since married and given birth to two children who hold US citizenship.
It is said that while boarding the plane on March 5 at Port Columbus Airport in Ohio, in a moment of desperation she went to the toilets and drank an entire bottle of hand soap. Subsequently she was taken off the flight and sent to the nearest hospital, delaying her deportation.
The report indicates that despite the incident, she is likely to be deported within the next two to three weeks. Her lawyer has since applied for her deportation to be postponed and for her green card application to be expedited.
Chen applied for political asylum in 2004, but two years later her case was rejected and deportation proceedings began. Owing to her lack of proficiency with English, she was not able to understand the details of her case and missed the appeal date.
At present Chen is being held in prison. Her bother told reporters that everyday her 6 and 7-year-old children cry for their mother and are unwilling to go to school. Chen said “I want to say in the US. If I had no husband, no children, and was alone in China, I’d rather just die.”
