A Hong Kong man has been jailed after he impregnated his teenage daughter then tried to force her to have an abortion, South China Morning Post reports.
The 55-year-old man had sex with his 17-year-old daughter in October 2013, resulting in her becoming pregnant and later giving birth to a baby girl. Once he discovered she was pregnant, the man tried to coerce his daughter into having an abortion in mainland China, according to the report.
The court also heard that ever since his daughter was a teenager, the man had routinely made sexual maneuvers while she slept. The girl testified that she would often wake to find her underwear removed and bodily fluids in her bed, and could do nothing more than try to stay awake and wear tight-fitting clothing. In a horrible twist to this already nightmarish story, the girl’s mentally disabled sister committed suicide upon finding out what had occurred.
High Court Judge Madam Justice Esther Toh Lye-ping sentenced the man to imprisonment for a term of six years and eight months, saying it would have been 10 years if he had not already submitted a guilty plea. The judge claimed her decision was bound by precedent and appealed to law-makers to raise the current 14-year maximum penalty for incest.
Toh’s judgment carried a stern and indignant tone:
The defendant is a totally shameless coward to prey on his own daughter. This is a case where instead of protecting his daughter, he violated her and breached the trust between father and daughter.
This decision comes only days after the High Court in Hong Kong ruled on another appalling crime, delivering a guilty verdict in the murder trial of the man who killed and ate his parents.
This is also not the first time the law in China has had to deal with a parent’s sinful exploitation of their own children—a Shanghai mother was charged for forcing her 12 year-old daughter into prostitution in 2013.
