The world’s best whisky doesn’t come from Scotland. It comes from Taiwan. According to the World Whiskies Awards, at least, which recently awarded Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique the title of world’s best single malt.
The tipple, produced by the King Car distillery in Taiwan’s Yilan County, was praised by judges as being “surprisingly smooth” with a flavour reminiscient of “bourbon-infused milk chocolate”. The whisky has notes of fruit cake, clove, cinnamon, fudge, marzipan and walnut, but is “integrated and surprisingly light”, according to the judges.
With an element of sandalwood, the Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique starts creamy, waters out, almost disappears before rubbing hot brown sugar into the oesophagus, leaving a tiny bitter trace.
