SCS Original Musical Festival: The Wonderful Adventures of Nils @ Shanghai Culture Square
This fourth annual Original Musical Festival by Shanghai Culture Square continues to help drive China’s musical theatre development forward. The festival will show Nobel Prize-winner Selma Lagerloff’s The Wonderful Adventures of Nils this Friday and Saturday. A spoiled boy who enjoys torturing animals, shrinks to their size when the animals seek revenge. He escapes on a goose and gets an aerial view of Sweden, as well as life lessons that make him a man. Emma Pollock @ Yuyintang
If you’re a fan of 90s Scottish indie band The Delgados, we’ve got news for you. Emma Pollock, former lead vocalist of The Delgados, does a solo show at Yuyintang this Friday. She and some Shanghai-based musicians will play music from her solo albums. Local garage rockers Banana Monkey, punk pop rockers XXYY and Britpoppers Girls Like Mystery will be her support acts. Three years ago ShingO2 and Spin Master A-1 put on an incredible show at the Shelter for all the Nujabes fans out there. Ouyang Chun: My Story @ Shangart Gallery
Ouyang Chun’s paintings seek to draw stories childishly and unadorned and mirrors his own life experiences. The show presents a sequence of emotive pictures of memories and feelings of the artist through his paintings. Themes are “Me”, “My Romance” and “Pulp Fiction” which reflects his life in Xi’an. OPENING: Xu Zhen: Solo Exhibition @ Long Museum (West Bund)
Check out the opening of Xu Zhen’s solo exhibition this Sunday. Long Museum West Bund celebrates its first birthday by putting renowned Shanghai artist Xu’s work on show. Xu works with all sorts of media including painting, sculpture, installation, video, photography and performance. Many of these will be on display in this exhibit which contains more than 100 works of art, ranging from early 90s up to now. Xu’s work is known to be humorous and culturally relevant.
