Yesterday marked the first day of construction on Shanghai’s new polar-themed ocean park in Pudong New Area, set to open in 2017.
The Shanghai Haichang Polar Ocean World is on track to include 12 display venues, three large theatres, four marine animal interactive programs and at least 15 entertainment facilities.
According to Shanghai Daily, the park will cover almost 30 hectares, and include a broad range of Artic and Antarctic wildlife.
The park is also hoping to appeal to the masses by combining both international and Chinese elements, in particular Shanghai features—demonstrating how Shanghai is growing as China’s most diverse, modern and multicultural city.
The developer of the park has predicted that it is likely to attract around six million visitors a year, and form (along with Shanghai Disneyland) the largest tourist destination in East Asia.
Shanghai Disneyland is still on track to open at the start of next year, and will be accessible via a new high speed train.
