Du Meiying rests in the cave where she has lived for two years.
A 52-year-old woman has reportedly lived in a damp cave on the outskirts of Yichang city, Hubei province after her family fell upon hard times and could not afford to look after her.
Du washes hands with water she collects from the roof of the cave.
According to Tencent News, at first the family sent Du to a local social welfare house, but soon after she had a row with other elderly residents and was sent away. Without any other support to rely on, she took to living in the cave.
Du eats cooked rice mixed with salt.
Living full time in the 100-square-meter cave, she uses a tub to collect water dripping down from the ceiling to wash, drink and cook with.
Du plants vegetables near the entrance to her cave.
At present, Du’s sole source of income is the 100 yuan she receives each month from the local government. To pass the time and supplement her diet, Du grows cabbages on a plot of land outside her cave using seeds donated to her by a local farmer.
Every other month, Du walks to the nearby village to buy rice and other living supplies.
Du told reporters that at present her health is very poor and she hopes to find somewhere to move to where she won’t constantly be assaulted by the wind and rain.
Du uses a stick to help her walk.
