A security guard from Weihai city has won praise online after it was reported that he’s been donating nearly 470,000 yuan ($76,928) of his salary to different people in need over the past 19 years.
According to CCTV News, the security guard, who goes by the name Ma Yong, earns a modest salary of 2,200 yuan ($352) per month. Yet from his monthly wage, he donates around 1,700 yuan ($272) of it to 17 poor students.
Ma claims that because the company he works for provides him with meals and a uniform, he spends very little on food and clothes for himself, therefore is able donate most of his wages to those in need.
The small sum of money that he retains from his monthly salary is used for essentials like daily transport and phone bills.
Ma claims that he is “well fed, and warmly clothed, and that’s happiness”.
However, Ma’s charitable donations have started to cause a stress on his family.
Ma still lives with his parents, both in their 70s and occupied as sanitation workers. Since finding out about his generosity, they feel it is increasingly necessary to save money for him and his future.
His mother has asked him to stop his donations, however, Ma refused to do so.
He later explained that he does not want his parents to struggle or have a hard time, but he simply cannot give up aiding the students in need.
It was a previous kindness he received when he worked as a veteran that has encouraged him to keep donating. “When I was in the army, my mother lost a finger due to a machine accident, but we did not have the money to see a doctor. My comrades volunteered to donate the money for her treatment,” Ma has been quoted saying.
Ever since Ma left the army, he has been employed in a number of different jobs. Yet, no matter how much he earned, he always donated a part of his income to poor children and others in need.
He explained that “no matter what I pay, I feel it’s worthwhile”.
