A man who drove past an injured elderly woman without helping her in Wuhu city, Anhui province later discovered that she was his own mother, although by then it was already too late to save her.
The driver, surnamed Zhang, spotted the badly hurt old woman on the side of the road as he was on the way to his mother’s home in Nanling county, according to SCMP, citing the Anhui Business Daily.
Upon arriving at his mother’s house, the neighbors told Zhang that she had just taken off to go visit him. Feeling that something was wrong, he immediately drove back in the direction from where he came.
He passed the woman covered in blood on the ground and realized that she was his mother. She’d been struck in a hit-and-run accident.
Zhang called the ambulance take her to the hospital, but she died on the way.
He later told reporters that he hadn’t stopped initially for the woman because his car didn’t have a dashboard recorder.
People have called for a “Good Samaritan Law” to go into effect across all of China, as instances of people getting extorted for money after helping others have left many hesitant about offering a hand in cases like these.
In February, an elderly man who fell down on the street was ignored by dozens of passersby for eight whole minutes until he was eventually run over by a car.
