A 50-year-old school teacher in Gansu province says she has spent the past three years taking care of 130 stray dogs she rescued, with only the help of two assistants she hired.
The pet-lover, surnamed Wen, said she spends more than 6,000 yuan of her own pocket money per month for all the dogs’ needs.
”I need to prepare around 70 mantou, 2 kilos of beef and 5 kilos of grain to feed them every day,” she said.
The cost of the dogs’ food ends up totaling around 5,000 yuan per month, while she spends 1,000 yuan per month paying her two employees.
“I take care of these stray dogs because I feel bad leaving them outside,” Wen said. “I just can’t let that happen.”
Wen doesn’t received government support or subsidies from other organizations, but occasionally, some kind-hearted people will donate money to her cause. Wen says she is constantly strapped for cash, and sometimes can’t even afford to pay her assistants.
A couple in Sichuan recently made headlines after they were found peddling items on the street to help pay for the 60 stray cats and dogs they’ve taken in over the past 10 years.
