Cars were drowned under water yesterday after a bout of torrential rainfall hit Changsha, Hunan province.
The forecast in Hunan yesterday was severe, as heavy rain and hail triggered flooding in various parts of the province. Many cars were unable to survive the storm, and as drivers’ engines were damaged in the water, many were forced to abandon their vehicles on the road.
Flooding on the city’s Yada Road was particularly bad, with water levels reaching 1.5 meters.
One driver said he spent 3,000 yuan hiring a towing company to haul his car out of the river-like street.
Rainstorms and hailstorms since Friday in the province were estimated to have affected 240,000 people as of Sunday. Over 12,000 people in the province had been evacuated by Saturday, according to Xinhua. No casualties have been reported.
Thunderstorms are expected to persist in Hunan the rest of the week.
