Around 100,000 kilos of dead fish washed ashore in Huizhou city, Guangdong province this past Friday afternoon after they died in the pond overnight.
According to NetEase, an excessive quantity of ammonia from a nitrogen fertilizer led to the death of the fish.
Workers were sent to pull the dead fish out of the pond, while others spread 2.5 tons of edible salt to try and help the living fish detox.
The fish pond owner, surnamed Zhang, said the massive loss of fish could cost him over one million yuan in lost revenue.
“It’s the first time that my fish farming has had such a problem since I started in 1996. I’ll need another ten years to make up for this loss” said Zhang.
Last August, 21 tanks worth of dead fish surfaced in Shandong river after an alcohol plant discharged untreated waste effluent directly into the river.
