Two people were killed and 48 more injured in Zhejiang province after dozens of tourists climbed up a netted structure to get a better view of a performance when it collapsed.
The accident occurred at around 11:30 a.m. yesterday in Wenzhou city’s Cangnan county during a performance at an annual flower gala. One by one, visitors began ascending the net held up by a wire frame in an attempt to get a better view of the show, until well over 50 people were perched on the thing.
Footage shows the moment the structure gave out and toppled to the ground, sending some of the visitors flying off and leaving others to be crushed by the weight.
One person was killed on the spot, while another died later despite medical treatment. Among the 48 injured, two are in critical condition and 12 require operations for bone fractures, according to the most recent reports from Xinhua.
The wire structure is used for Outward Bound courses but is not meant to hold so much weight on one side. It collapsed due to uneven stress, according to the local government.
A video news report shows the moment the structure fell over.
