A 62-year-old woman in Siping city, Jilin province has kept more than 20 snakes in her home over the past 30 years.
At the age of 32, Wang Guizhen married a man named Huang Changjiang. The couple moved from Liaoning to Jilin, where they found a house near a mountain. They grew vegetables and mushrooms to make a living, and began collecting snakes that roamed the mountain area to keep as pets.
Local villagers steered clear of the couple, who had soon enough taken in over 20 snakes to feed and care for like their own “babies”. The couple fed the snakes lean meat once every 10 days, totaling more than 20 yuan per meal. Although they could afford very little, they didn’t mind the costs of keeping the snakes.
In 2010, Huang began suffering from uremia. The couple gave up their possessions in an attempt to raise money for his medical treatment, but Wang refused to give up caring for their pet snakes. In 2012, Huang passed away, and on his death bed, advised his wife to release the snakes back to the mountain if she could no longer care for them.
That spring, Huang decided it was time to let the snakes go. A few days later, however, she was surprised to see that three of them had returned to her home. She decided she would take them back in and care for them.
When Wang was later introduced to another man, Zhang Quan, she told him: “I have a dog and snakes, and I can’t leave them. Does that scare you?” Zhang told her no, and not long after, Wang and Zhang started a new life together.
Wang and her husband live in a very old house, but do what they can to keep the snakes comfortable. She lines the windows with plastic sheets and places warming pads next to the snakes when it’s too cold.
Within the past two years, the couple’s health has been deteriorating. Wang has determined that sooner or later, she will have no choice but to release the snakes again. In front of the reporters she was heard saying to her pets: “When the plums begin to bloom, I will let you go. Mom can no longer support you”.
